What is a Convergence Movement Church ?
The Convergence Movement is a way of looking at the Church of the next century. The history of the Church in America shows us that a renewal occurs approximately every 100 years. We believe that we are in the early stages of the next great renewal. Some churches believe that the future holds a church that is essentially a multimedia entertainment center that is focused on biblical literalism, conservative theology, and a whole lot more technology than spirituality. We believe that is a narrow view of Church.
The Convergence Movement believes that the Church of the next century will be a coming together, or converging, of qualities from three major branches of the historic Church:
The Convergence Movement 1.0 emphasizes liturgy and sacraments, evangelical focus, and charismatic power in worship, congregational life, and outreach. The Eucharist is central, there is a high view (but not a literal view) of Scripture, and there is room for the work of the Holy Spirit. The Convergence Church anticipates the presence and working of the Spirit through God’s people in worship and in all aspects of congregational life including outreach ministries.
Convergence Movement 2.0 takes the Convergence philosophy to its next logical step - to those who have rejected the institutional church and have found God elsewhere, wherever that may be. CM 2.0 seeks to journey with all who have found God, to share our experiences, to develop meaningful rituals, to share our practices so that we all might be strengthened and renewed!
